Horticulture 2001

How much of a garden is natural? Horticulture is a series of sculptures made of natural and artificial plants as well as craft materials such as wire, ribbon, wool, beads and buttons. The work is based on the idea of creating a garden and how much of the process is ‘natural’ and how much is based artifice or making artificial conditions for growing natural forms. In the sculptures there is no hierarchy between the natural or artifcial; the boundaries are blurred as one form melds into the other through intricate and labourious modes of constructions. The sculptures are attached at the ceiling but are constructed to exist in the space between the ceiling and the floor.
